Few things are more counterintuitive to a homeowner than opening an AC access panel expecting cold air and finding a block of ice instead. Freezing is one of the most common AC complaints, especially in humid climates where the conditions for ice formation are almost always present. The good news is that the causes are well understood and usually fixable.
What's actually freezing
The ice typically forms on the indoor evaporator coil, and sometimes on the refrigerant lines running to the outdoor unit. The coil is supposed to stay cold enough to pull heat and moisture out of the air passing over it, but not so cold that moisture in the air freezes directly onto its surface. When something disrupts that balance, ice starts to build, which then blocks airflow and makes the underlying problem worse.
Cause 1: Restricted airflow
A dirty air filter, closed or blocked vents, or a failing blower motor all reduce the volume of warm air passing over the evaporator coil. Less airflow means the coil gets colder than it's designed to, and that excess cold condenses moisture into ice rather than draining it away as water. This is the single most common cause of a frozen system, and often the simplest to fix.
Cause 2: Low refrigerant
Refrigerant should circulate at a specific pressure and temperature. If the system is low on refrigerant — almost always due to a leak somewhere in the line set or coil — the remaining refrigerant expands and gets colder than intended, which can cause the coil to freeze even with normal airflow. Low refrigerant is not something to simply "top off": the leak itself needs to be located and repaired, or the system will just lose charge again.
Cause 3: Running the system in cool weather
Even in South Florida, mild, low-humidity stretches happen. Running an AC system on a cool night, or setting the thermostat unusually low, can cause the coil temperature to drop enough to freeze even with a perfectly healthy system.
Cause 4: Thermostat or control issues
A malfunctioning thermostat that keeps the compressor running longer than it should, without adequate cycling, can drive coil temperatures down over time, particularly overnight.
What to do the moment you see ice
- Turn the system off completely — switch the thermostat to "off," not just a lower fan setting
- Turn the fan to "on" (not "auto") so it can help the coil thaw, without running the compressor
- Give it several hours (often overnight) to fully thaw before restarting
- Check and replace the air filter if it's dirty
- Do not run the system again until it has completely thawed — restarting a partially frozen system can push water into places it shouldn't be, and can risk compressor damage
When to call a professional
If the filter is clean and vents are open but the system still freezes, or if it freezes again shortly after thawing, the cause is likely refrigerant or a mechanical issue that requires a licensed technician to diagnose safely.
